His discoveries were so revolutionary, that beekeeping can be divided in two eras very easily as pre-Huber and post-Huber. This edition of Huber's Observations by far surpasses any other edition ever printed in the English language. First it has both Volume I and II, while every English edition currently in print that I am aware of is only Volume I of the 1809 edition. which is only a third of the final Huber book. The second volume was published in 1814 in French 5 years after that 1809 edition and contains Huber's research on the origin of wax, the construction of comb, the ventilation of the hive and much more. Second, it is the best English translation from the original French and the only one I know of that has both volumes. C.P. Dadant, was uniquely qualified to do the translation. Dadant was born in France and French was his first language, yet he spent most of his life beekeeping; and writing and editing beekeeping articles and books in America in English. Third, all of the English editions currently in print have only 2 plates (if any). Only the previous Dadant edition (1926) had all 14 of the original plates but unfortunately they were only halftones of some old yellow copies and are not very readable. This edition has new scans from a very good condition edition of the original 1814 French of both Volumes of Nouvelles Observations Sur Les Abeilles so these are clearer than any previous edition other than the original 1814 French edition. An additional engraving of Huber's work from Cheshire's book, plus an engraving of Francis Huber from the Dadant edition have been included. In addition, 7 more photos of a museum quality reproduction of Huber's Leaf hive have also been included. All figures have been split out and enlarged and put in the text where they are referred to. Photos of the original plates are included at the back for historic and artistic purposes. Fourth, to put this book in context I have included a memoir of Huber by Professor De Candolle, a friend of Huber. This gives a bit of background on Huber's life. Fifth, the only other edition to come close to this, the 1926 edition by Dadant, was in very small print. This one is 12 point and a typeface that appears to be larger and is very readable.

Number of Pages: 674

Dimensions: 1.63 x 9 x 6 IN

Publication Date: January 19, 2012

Report copyright infringement

by Nikki Husted (Author)

Hate the high price of eggs? The Doughertys begin at the beginning, advising readers on how to find a reliable dairy cow, move her to the homestead, and settle her in. They take readers on the round of daily chores, including managing their cow's grazing patterns and monitoring pasture health, milking a cow, and handling the milk. They explain how a solar-powered cow becomes the heart of a diversified farmstead, providing food for calves, pigs, and other livestock; milk and meat for the family; and manure for high-quality compost to build healthy garden soil. The book's exemplary how-to content is framed by an introduction and conclusion that describes their life philosophy as "cow people" and the many benefits that manifest in communities where small, food-independent farmsteads thrive as models of sustainable human land-use.

"This is the homestead dairy cow book every homesteader needs!"--Amy Fewell, founder, Homesteaders of America
Author Biography

Shawn and Beth Dougherty are the authors of The Independent Farmstead. They have been farming together since the 1980s, for the last 26 years in eastern Ohio, where they manage 27 acres designated by the state as "not suitable for agriculture," as well as a monastery farm of 100 acres. It is drawn from real life though some names are changed or not given to protect the guilty. The vast majority of ranches in the United States, whether commercial or life style, are neither profitable nor sustainable; the author explains why this is so and what must be done to improve the situation. The changes in philosophy and in management practices required to do this are spelled out in some detail by a man who used them to turn an almost bankrupt ranch into a consistently profitable and stable operation. The book is not a how-to cookbook but rather is an attempt to get people to think of ranching, and agriculture in general, as the biological endeavors, run on sunshine and rainfall that they once were and should be again, rather than the industrial enterprises that are common today. The methods described have been proven effective by people all over the world and their results can be duplicated by anyone who is willing to think through the situation and is not afraid to be different. As the authors' father once told him, "You have two kinds of neighbors, half of them think you are crazy and the other half knows you are crazy." The management described is not yet universally accepted but it works from all standpoints: it is financially sound, ecologically sound and it is a good way to live and raise a family. Both the new, or would be, rancher just starting out and the established rancher will find information and advice in this book that can be used to make their operation more profitable, less dependent on purchased inputs and markets and a whole lot more fun.

Author Biography

Walt Davis spent more than fifty years as a working rancher in Texas and Oklahoma. He has lived all of the joys and all of the sorrows that go with ranch life and it is his unbiased opinion that ranching is (depending on how it is done) either the world's best way to make a living or an unending struggle against nature that will break the strongest spirit. Walt grew up in a ranching family and was exposed early on to ranching as it had been practiced in west Texas for many years. After a degree in animal husbandry from Texas A&M College, he took over management of a ranch in southeast Oklahoma. It soon became apparent that there were major flaws in ranch management as he had been taught in college. Walt started searching for "a better way." He soon realized that agriculture is a biological rather than an industrial process. This book is an outgrowth of that search and its' results. Walt and wife Diann live on a small place on the outskirts of Calera Oklahoma; Walt consults with ranchers and other land managers over a wide area, he teaches seminars, and writes columns for the Farm Progress family of magazines; after a bad fall curtailed his activities, he finalized How to Not Go Broke Ranching and is working on The Gyp Lease Tales and Other Lies (collection of short sketches of ranch life) and The Gathering at Oak Creek, a novel set in the west Texas ranch country. However, as Sarah Flack explains in The Art and Science of Grazing, the pasture/livestock relationship is incredibly complex.

If a farmer doesn't pay close attention to how the animals are grazing, the resulting poorly managed grazing system can be harmful to the health of the livestock, pasture plants, and soils. Well-managed pastures can instead create healthier animals, a diverse and resilient pasture ecosystem, and other benefits. Flack delves deeply below the surface of "let the cows eat grass," demonstrating that grazing management is a sophisticated science that requires mastery of plant and animal physiology, animal behavior, and ecology. She also shows readers that applying grazing management science on a working farm is an art form that calls on grass farmers to be careful observers, excellent planners and record-keepers, skillful interpreters of their observations, and creative troubleshooters.

The Art and Science of Grazing will allow farmers to gain a solid understanding of the key principles of grazing management so they can both design and manage successful grazing systems. The book's unique approach presents information first from the perspective of pasture plants, and then from the livestock perspective--helping farmers understand both plant and animal needs before setting up a grazing system.

This book is an essential guide for ruminant farmers who want to be able to create grazing systems that meet the needs of their livestock, pasture plants, soils, and the larger ecosystem. The book discusses all the practical details that are critical for sustained success: how to set up a new system or improve existing systems; acreage calculations; paddock layout; fence and drinking water access; lanes and other grazing infrastructure; managing livestock movement and flow; soil fertility; seeding and reseeding pastures; and more. The author includes descriptions of real grazing systems working well on dairy, beef, goat, and sheep farms in different regions of North America. The book covers pasture requirements specific to organic farming, but will be of use to both organic and non-organic farms.
Author Biography

Sarah Flack is the author of Organic Dairy Production and a nationally known consultant on grazing and organic livestock. And with so many books in this area that have completely disappeared

The main point of it, so often forgotten over and over, that grass is more productive when shorn and given time to re-grow. That is the core base of all the current popular works on rotational and "mob" grazing.

It's not too surprising then, that you can go through Voisin's book and find everything they are saying now as "revolutionary". Because he took the time to make a full study of his land, it's cattle, and everything anyone had written on the subject up to that point.

Also not too surprising is that only the really profitable grazers actually find this book and study it. Then re-study it. Because a regular re-study of Voison's work brings new understanding, new ideas, and greater simplicity to anyone's grazing operation. As well as more profitability.

The underlying basic to this work is that through managed grazing, the cows can help the grass be more productive. They help the soil regenerate through their interaction with the grass, very similar to how the vast roaming herds of grazing and browsing animals across the Western plains developed and maintained the prairies. The sheer size of those herds proved the land was capable of supporting massive tonnage of livestock through grazing - and following natural patterns.

But that same land, a few decades later, first was mismanaged into a massive Dust Bowl - and then recovered from it. And that both says a lot about our own human arrogance, and our ability to use humility ot learn from our mistakes.

Grazing cattle, done responsibly, can improve the land beyond what it's produced in decades before. It can start restoring the erosion that plowing nad cultivation have created. That's if we actually study that book and apply it.

In that way, we can first work to make our farming more sustainable and pay its own way, then we can encourage it to save our futures by restoring the land, and producing higher quality beef and forage than it has in centuries.

IF we read, study, and apply now...

- - - -

This is a reproduction of the original 1959 edition, formatted to trade paperback (6x9). The lyric essays of Lambs in Winter take readers through the seasonal cycles of raising sheep and hens and growing fruits and vegetables while confronting the challenges of winter storms, summer floods, invasive weeds, and pests and diseases.

Ever conscious of her place in a historically colonized and ecologically degraded landscape, Lathem wrestles with ethical questions that come to many rural dwellers who--following Thoreau--set out to "live deliberately," in a time of climate crisis, persistent racial inequity, and growing economic inequality. Likewise, she grapples with the moral complexities of small-scale animal husbandry. Through her efforts at self-provisioning, without holding illusions of the self-reliant individual, Lathem finds herself deeply embedded in the community and reliant on others, especially as her region deals with repeated catastrophic flooding brought on by climate change.

Through elegant prose and insightful investigations into pressing contemporary issues, Lathem evokes the world of her farm and the surrounding countryside with a spiritual awareness of the human journey on this earth. Others take a darker turn. A modern-day rancher with decades of experience, Mary has dealt with the hardships and challenges that come with this way of life. She's survived harsh conditions like the "winter of 50 below" and economic downturns that threatened her family's livelihood. She's also wrestled with her role as a woman in a profession that doesn't always treat her as equal. Four generations later, Mary grew up on this same portion of land, learning how to ride horseback and take care of livestock. James Rebanks' isn't. The first son of a shepherd, who was the first son of a shepherd himself, his family have lived and worked in the Lake District of Northern England for generations, further back than recorded history. It's a part of the world known mainly for its romantic descriptions by Wordsworth and the much loved illustrated children's books of Beatrix Potter. But James' world is quite different. His way of life is ordered by the seasons and the work they demand. It hasn't changed for hundreds of years: sending the sheep to the fells in the summer and making the hay; the autumn fairs where the flocks are replenished; the grueling toil of winter when the sheep must be kept alive, and the light-headedness that comes with spring, as the lambs are born and the sheep get ready to return to the hills and valleys.

The Shepherd's Life the story of a deep-rooted attachment to place, modern dispatches from an ancient landscape that describe a way of life that is little noticed and yet has profoundly shaped the landscape over time. In evocative and lucid prose, James Rebanks takes us through a shepherd's year, offering a unique account of rural life and a fundamental connection with the land that most of us have lost. It is a story of working lives, the people around him, his childhood, his parents and grandparents, a people who exist and endure even as the culture - of the Lake District, and of farming - changes around them.

Many memoirs are of people working desperately hard to leave a place.
