Voltaire (1694-1778) was one of the leading writers of the French Enlightenment. Famous for his wit, he advocated freedom of speech, freedom of religion and the separation of the church and the state. He was a prodigious writer, producing more than 2000 books and pamphlets, as well as plays and poetry and tens of thousands of letters.
