Lane Falcon's premier collection, Deep, Blue Odds, traces a mother's transformation through her child's illness: through shock, grief, and, finally, a hard-won acceptance that her baby wasn't born with the airway he needs to survive. These poems often step outside themselves, leaning on symbol and abstraction to express the mother's heartbreak, but they always return to somewhere raw and real. Through an emergency tracheotomy, code blues, and multiple failed airway reconstruction surgeries, her child's physical suffering reverberates in her body. The collection searches, again and again, for answers in the Mariana Trenches of the soul. And in that depth, anguish is met with countless treasures, and grace turns doubt into faith, desperation into surrender, and fear into fathomless love.
