In Kiribati mythology, Kaiboia, a lazy man, failed to provide food offerings to their gods. To avoid the villagers' punishment, he went fishing, but when a strong tug pulled at the end of his fishing line, he pulled, hoping to catch a huge fish. But what he saw on his hook was not a fish, but an island.
