Trueborns created Mishalla in a tank. She's a GEN, a Genetically Engineered Non-human, enslaved by trueborns-until a secret, experimental treatment dissolves the control circuitry in her body. Now Mishalla is in two worlds, the enslaved past she's put behind her and her new life as a low-caste but free lowborn.
As one of the liberated, Mishalla can pass as a lowborn girl. But fitting into lowborn society isn't as easy as she thought it would be. She loves Eoghan, the lowborn boy she married. But Eoghan's away on Kinship missions so often, she feels useless and lonely.
Then the Kinship offers Mishalla a mission of her own. Disguised as a GEN, she's sent to find a traitor in the underground organization. But what was supposed to be a low-risk mission turns to disaster, with Mishalla responsible for far more lives than her own. Can she save herself, save the others, and reveal the traitor in time?
