Patrick DesJarlait grew up on the Red Lake Reservation in Minnesota, and from early childhood enjoyed drawing his relatives and neighbors. He enlisted with the US Navy during World War II, creating animated films to aid the military. After his time with the US Navy, he began working as a commercial artist, drawing advertisements.
